Je Suis Charlie
Dear Mom,
As you have probably heard on the news there was a shooting at a Paris satirical newspaper called Charlie Hebdo. On January 7, twelve employees from the magazine were killed by two Islamic extremists and many more were injured, because of cartoons posted of Muhammad. Later others were killed by the two masked men who later were identified to belong to Al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen. The shooting took place in the eleventh arrondissement, while my apartment is in the second. I was home watching tv when the shooting took place and am safe, although a little shaken. In my opinion the people at the magazine had the right to print whatever they wanted to, because they have the freedom of speech and press and they used it. This being said, in the United States whenever something even slightly resembling this muhammad cartoon surfaces it is shut down and considered a hate crime. I think this situation stemmed from a joke that was taken way too seriously. Obviously those people didn’t deserve to die, but also they should have taken into consideration past events. Although these employees shouldn’t have to be paranoid about everything they print they have to accept the world they live in and realize just years ago they were bombed because of cartoons that were surprisingly similar. Anyways the criminals have been caught and I am safe. Hope to see you soon!
